The Springfield Area Lead-Off Club has named Gavyn Beckner its Brent Thomas Player of the Year. Beckner was one of several honorees recognized at a Monday luncheon by the organization.
Beckner has been a force in the batter’s box and on the mound for the Tigers this spring. He’s hitting .375 with a .426 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .490, despite Republic’s schedule packed with strong opponent pitching.
On the mound, Beckner is 5-1 with a 2.35 earned run average. He’s allowed 37 hits and 16 walks in 38 2/3 innings, striking out 43.
The Lead-Off Club awarded two sets of awards: a Most Valuable Player, a Player of the Year, and a Pitcher of the Year. One of each award went to players from Springfield schools, and the other went to players from area schools.
Brody McNeil of Rogersville was named area Pitcher of the Year. Curry Sutherland of Rogersville was area MVP.
Ben Smith of Springfield Catholic was named city Player of the Year. Braxton Baker of Hillcrest was city Pitcher of the Year. Brooks Kettering of Glendale was city MVP.
