Three Republic Athletes Announce College Commitments

Three Republic athletes announced commitments to college sports programs Wednesday. Ahlante Askew will attend John Brown University to play basketball. Cam Johnson will play football at Evangel University. Curtis Fair is the first player from Republic to commit to play college men’s volleyball, and he will attend the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy.

Ahlante Askew – John Brown University Basketball

Why John Brown?

It just felt right over there. Even though it was over 2 1/2 hours away, it still feels kind of similar. There are just great people over there and great coaches [who ] really brought me into the nice environment that’s already built. Something about being there made me excited about college.

A lot of the big players were announcing where they were going and you waited to make that decision. What was behind the wait…?

I wasn’t going to rush it, and I felt like … it wasn’t a huge deal to get it out there. I knew when people asked what my answer was.

What are you looking forward to the most about college basketball?

Getting the opportunity to play. I think I’ll get to go down there and get a lot of minutes and get better as a player. And I’m excited to get my education paid for. It’s really awesome.

Curtis Fair – University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Volleyball

Why did you choose [The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy ]?

I chose it because I like the campus…and the coaches were super friendly. I bonded with them in the short amount of time that I was able to be with them. It’s a super good school, I’m going to get to continue my education and it’s the … right path for me because it’s the field of study I want to go into.

What are you looking forward to the most about college volleyball?

Just getting better and being able to play for longer. Since I’ve only played for like a year-and-a-half, I haven’t been able to enjoy it as long as I’ve wanted to. So adding another four years on top of this is what I’m excited for.

Tell me about how you got involved in volleyball, because it’s not something that pops immediately to mind.

My dad came home one day from work and I was asleep on the couch, and [he] asked if I wanted to play volleyball, and I said yeah. So I went to the first (club volleyball) practice, and I’ve gone to every practice since.

Cam Johnson – Evangel University Football

Why Evangel?

I really like the college. It’s close to home, so I’m still close to my family. They’re also a Christian college, and II’m a strong Christian, so I’ll be able to support those morals as I play football.

And what are you looking forward to the most about college football?

I’m ready to get back at it. I was kind of disappointed with myself this season, and I want another four years to work my butt off and get better.

What do you take from your time at Republic that you’ll carry with you?

Just that culture of hard work. Everything you do, you have to do it to your best ability. you have to pay attention to detail. You have to work hard, not just for yourself to be good, but also to make sure your team succeeds as well.
