Connor VanMatre and Dakota Thompson both scored second-half goals to lift Republic past Sedalia Smith-Cotton 2-0 at home Thursday. The win was the first of the season and the first as a head coach for new arrival Jesus Zuniga. It was also the first time in program history that Republic had beaten Smith-Cotton.
“Energy was high during warm up, and it translated to the game. They were hungry for the goal and it was an all around team effort, from starters, people filling in for others, and people coming off the bench,” Zuniga said.
When Republic and Smith-Cotton finished their first half in a scoreless tie, Republic had played 220 minutes without a goal. But they broke the scoring drought three minutes into the second half when VanMatre got an assist from Antonio Gila Cea and booted the ball home.
Scoring the first goal was a huge lift for his team, according to Zuniga.
“Going into double overtime the first game was a teaser, just knowing we were that close,” he said. “Getting two goals that included two assists — that’s always a great sign. We had several opportunities we didn’t capitalize on, so that’s even more enticing when the boys watch the film.
“Now we can relax, play possession ball, create opportunities, and just have fun. That’s when we play our best — when we relax and don’t put too much stress on ourselves.”
Republic added one more goal in the 74th minute when Ethan Meyer made a run as a defender and fed Dakota Thompson, who headed the ball into the net.
The win improves Republic’s record to 1-2. The Tigers are off until September 6, when they’ll travel to Joplin.
