The Lady Tigers scored their first goal of the season and picked up their first win of the season Monday at home, beating Parkview 3-0. Along the way, three different players picked up their first career varsity goals.
Freshman Kaylee Cornelsen got things rolling in the first half, putting Republic on top 1-0. Her first career goal ended a two-game scoring drought that had plagued Republic to start the season. Hauck said scoring the first goal of the year loosened up the team, but he thought his players continued to press after Cornelsen put the ball in the net.
“I thought we were doing a really nice job possession-wise after that first goal, but we were still forcing it,” said coach Kevin Hauck. “But I think that’s the nature of the game today, because the girls… were expecting more (scoring). So at halftime, I told them, ‘Settle down a little bit (and) take a deep breath.'”
In the second half, Republic controlled the ball more completely. Forward Kathryn Flippin scored her first varsity goal to double Republic’s lead to 2-0. The Lady Tigers followed that up with a third goal, this one by freshman Cadence Lugar, to finish off the scoring.
“They were disappointed after that second loss, especially (because it’s) a game we should have won. I told them to forget about it and move on, and they did a nice job of that tonight,” Hauck said. “We moved the ball tonight better than we did Thursday. I see a lot of progression for us from the start of the season.”
Republic plays Tuesday at Springfield Glendale.
