On the first day of the state swim championships in St. Peters, Karissa Metzger raised her game to meet the moment. Metzger cut time from both her previous bests in the preliminary heats of her two events, earning a finals appearance in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Swimming first in the 200-yard individual medley, Metzger improved her previous best time by 53-hundredths of a second. She had been seeded 13th coming into the event, and she finished 12th, but only the top eight make the finals. She’ll swim in the consolation finals tomorrow.
In the breaststroke, where she was seeded fifth out of 32 competitors, Metzger placed third in prelims. She finished in 1:06.79, breaking her own school record by .87 seconds. Metzger was one of five swimmers to finish below the 1:08 mark. She’ll have an opportunity to bring hold a gold medal tomorrow in the finals.
