Devon McMillin drives to the basket after a back-court steal late in Republic’s loss to Thayer.

Second Quarter Sinks Tigers

Thayer built a big lead, then held on in the face of a furious late-game rally by Republic, knocking off the Tigers 64-58 in the semifinals of the Bolivar Tournament Friday. Thayer outscored Republic 23-9 in the second quarter.

The Bobcats eventually led by as many as 15 points. Republic got the lead down to eight at the end of the third quarter, 47-39. And when Ahlante Askew buried a long three-pointer with 19.5 seconds left, it cut the Thayer lead to three points, 61-58.

Republic had to foul on the ensuing possession, and Thayer made three of four free throws to account for the final six-point margin.
