Republic allowed just 15 first-half points in a win over Monticello, Ark., at the Border War Shootout in Harrison, Ark. Saturday. The Tigers overcame a slow offensive start, started pulling away in the second quarter, then put the game away after halftime, winning 56-38. The Tigers did not allow a field goal for the first 6:45, building a 10-2 lead in the early minutes.
Seven different players scored for Republic, and six of them had at least six points. Junior Ahlante Askew led the Tigers with 16 points, and he was the only Republic players to reach double figures in scoring.
Republic led 26-15 at halftime, but went on a 15-2 run to open the third quarter to take control. Monticello failed to score a field goal for the first six minutes of the quarter.
Of several bright spots for the Tigers, James Rexroat came off the bench to score six points and contributed solid defense inside in his most substantial varsity appearance so far.
The game was part of a Border War shootout on the campus of North Arkansas College that paired Missouri teams with Arkansas teams throughout the day.
The win improves Republic’s record to 3-2. The Tigers host Hillcrest Tuesday and Republic Tiger Sports will carry the game live.
