Callie Newton Woods Honored by MO Sports Hall of Fame

Former Republic Lady Tiger Callie Newton Woods has been recognized by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Woods is one of seven 2021 recipients of the Wynn Award, given to women who made an impact in their sports.

“I was really surprised. I wasn’t expecting it,” she said. “But I’m just completely honored and humbled to be a part of it.”

Woods was a three-sport star at Republic, competing in volleyball, basketball, and track. She was a four-time all-state performer in track and field. In 1997, she was the state champion in discus and finished third in the shot put. She finished second in both events as a senior, setting school records that still stand today. She was also an all-state basketball player twice. Her school record for rebounds in a game (18) stood until Kaemyn Bekemeier pulled down 23 rebounds this season.

She also played at Drury during the first years of its women’s basketball program from 2001 to 2003. She later was a graduate assistant for Drury, including on its 2004 NCAA D-II national runner-up team.

Woods said she enjoys watching the continued success of both those programs.

“I’m proud to be a part of it. Republic has always been good. I grew up watching the teams in front of me play, and being a part of what Coach Flood has continued, I’m really proud. And then for Drury, this year, to see Coach (Amy) Eagan do what she’s done again, and to know I got to be a very beginning piece of that, that’s one of my favorite parts is that I got to help start something.”

Woods joins her sister, Amanda Newton Plotner, as a Wynn Award recipient. “I’m really thrilled that family could be here, and to share it with Amanda is pretty cool,” Woods said.

The Wynn Awards are named in honor of Dr. Mary Jo Wynn, the longtime Senior Women’s Administrator at Missouri State University, a 1999 inductee of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
