Zizzer D Zaps Republic

The Republic Lady Tigers scored six points in the first quarter against West Plains, and the second quarter was even worse. The Lady Tigers managed just 11 points in the first half, falling behind 23-11 on the way to a 47-29 loss to Class 5’s top-ranked team at the Nixa Invitational Tournament Friday.

The Lady Zizzers’ matchup zone caused fits for Republic all night, though Republic’s defense was good enough to keep it within striking distance until the fourth quarter. Only three players scored for West Plains, but those three did enough damage on their own – led by Ashton Judd, who had 19 points.

Republic is planing the tournament with a short bench because some of its varsity players have already reached their season limit of three tournaments, because they also play junior varsity. That, coupled with last night’s overtime win against Nixa, seemed to leave the Lady Tigers a step slower than usual. Republic also struggled at the free throw line, making just seven of 19 attempts.

Savana Powell-Goodman’s play was a bright spot for the Lady Tigers. She scored 15 points and played solid defense. She was the only Republic player in double figures in scoring. A night after Kaemyn Bekemeier scored 34 points against Nixa, the West Plains defense kept her in check, holding her to eight points.

Republic falls to 10-5 this season. Their five losses are to West Plains (#1 Class 5) twice, Incarnate Word Academy (#1 Class 6), Kickapoo (#2 Class 6) and Jefferson City (#3 Class 6). West Plains improves to 16-1.

The Lady Tigers play Springfield Parkview in the third game of the Nixa Invitational Saturday at 1:00. Republic Tiger Sports will carry the game live here.

Republic Scoring
Savana Powell-Goodman 15, Kaemyn Bekemeier 8, Regan Holmes 3, Ashlyn Leonard 3
