Republic golfers Clara Fronabarger and Regan Holmes will take their show on the road one last time. Holmes finished ninth at the district tournament at Horton Smith Golf Course with a score of 87, and Fronabarger finished 12th with an 89. Both were good enough to advance to the state tournament next week in Joplin, and each is happy to have the other alongside for another state experience.
“I’m excited. I wouldn’t want to go without Regan,” Fronabarger said.
“We’re a package deal,” added Holmes. “You get us both, or you don’t get us at all.”
Entering the district tournament, both golfers knew there was a good chance the state tournament would get them both for the second straight year. Fronabarger hadn’t played well in her previous outing, but knew “if we went out and had a decent day, we were set. Me and Regan are always nervous. We shouldn’t be, but we are.”
Holmes felt more confident this year than she did a year ago, when she barely squeaked under the cut to qualify for state.
“I definitely had a lot more confidence. I’ve been playing a lot more consistent. Normally, I’m a nervous wreck, and I still kind of was, but I knew I had a good shot to make it through.”
The state tournament is October 19-20 at Twin Hill Country Club in Joplin.
