Summer has become an important time of year for just about every high school sport. But in Republic in 2019, the summer is a little more important for the Lady Tigers volleyball team. That’s because the players are getting to know their new head coach, Allison Davis, and she is getting to know them.
“It’s going really well. We’re learning each other. I think what is important for me and the coaches to get from this summer is just building that trust and also building chemistry with the team,” Davis said.
“These girls are coming in at 5:45 on our open gym mornings, so they’re putting in the time. They’re working hard in the weight room. They’re getting stronger. So it’s about fine tuning those little things and then bringing it all back together.”
The Lady Tigers competed in a tournament at Willard this week. Earlier this summer, they won their pool in a tournament at Bolivar, finishing second overall. Earlier this summer, Republic was part of a league held at Hillcrest High School in Springfield. What most impressed Davis there was how quickly her players implemented the things she talked about in practice.
“I told them over and over, ‘I’m super proud of you guys.’ Because a lot of times when you try to work on the little skills, don’t put them into motion in a game-like setting. And they were doing that,” Davis said.
The Lady Tigers will also participate in an all-day team camp at Republic conducted by the Pittsburg State volleyball program next week.
