In his first high school tournament, Griffin Frey led Republic with a top-10 finish at the Bird Dog Classic at Briarbrook Golf Course in Carl Junction Monday. Frey shot a 14-over par 86 to tie for ninth with both Carter and Owen Swearingen of Neosho.
The Tigers finished ninth overall with a score of 366, one stroke behind Joplin. Carthage led the field with a total of 343, ten strokes ahead of second-place Nevada.
Tyson Young finished with a 91, Kendall Hamilton shot a 93, Kolby Hosp turned in a 96, and Austin O’Hara finished at 100 for the Tigers.
Frey had only one bad hole all day, turning in a 6 on the par-3 fourth hole. He shot a 45 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine, and every other hole was either a par or a bogey.
Hosp and Young turned in the only two birdies of the day for the Tigers. Hosp scored a 3 on the par-four sixth. Young shot a 3 on the par-4 12th.
