The Republic tennis team won its tenth dual without a loss, beating tennis newcomer Willard 9-0. It was the first-ever match between Republic and Willard, which is in its first year of tennis competition.
Before the matches started, Republic honored Willard tennis coach Cody Eckerson. Eckerson is a Republic graduate and played tennis under coach Eric Hanson, winning a district singles championship in 2011.
The teams played the six singles matches in an expanded format used in the state playoffs: best-two-of-three sets instead of the one extended set that’s standard during the regular season.
Republic gets a big challenge to its perfect record Wednesday, when the Tigers face Glendale at Cooper Tennis Complex starting at 4 pm.
