Republic’s DECA marketing students brought home three medals from state competition at Crowder College. One belonged to Chance Chastain, who grabbed a medal in Entrepreneurship. Two others came home with first-year DECA student Hailey Gold, who captured gold in marketing and silver in business math. Both of her awards were based on test results.
DECA is “held to prepare students for real-life business experiences in their future, and I think it really helps a lot while being a fun experience,” Gold said. “I loved being able to compete in a new atmosphere.”
Gold said her participation in DECA has helped prepare her for life after high school––despite the fact that she doesn’t want to pursue a career in business. “I want to be a pediatrician but I’d like to have a business minor as well, because I hope to be able to run my own pediatrics office. I’ve noticed that for myself and others, taking business/marketing classes and being involved in DECA and FBLA helps tremendously.”
Gold, who also placed fifth at FBLA state competition in impropmtu speaking, said she enjoys competing against other students.
“I love the competitive nature because it gives me something to work really hard for. Not only do I strive to beat those I’m competing against, but I make sure I beat myself and try to keep getting better,” she said. “I also love that we fiercely compete against people yet we’re able to leave the competition behind and be friends at the end of the day. It shows how great of these organizations are and I’m proud to be a part of them.”
