Drennan Saves PK Win for Lady Tigers

For the second straight night, Republic gave up a quick score to a quality opponent. But Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers overcame their early deficit for a 2-1 win in penalty kicks on the road at Rolla. Bella Drennan, playing just her second varsity match, made three saves during PKs to secure the win.

The Bulldogs struck first, just two minutes into the game, when Abbie Turner scored on an assist from Ellie Rodgers. They stayed in the lead for 72 minutes after that, until Abbie Hicks evened the score for Republic, tying the game in the 74th minute.

Both teams failed to score through two overtime periods. Clara Fronabarger, Anna Jones, and Grace Lightfoot all scored on their PKs for Republic, and Drennan’s three saves made the difference.

It’s the first time the Lady Tigers have ever beaten Rolla, a perennial soccer power.

“It’s a good quality win for us,” said coach Kevin Hauck. “The girls never gave up and just kept fighting. I’m really proud of how they worked tonight.”

The Republic JV beat Rolla 1-0. Freshman Kathryn Flippin scored her first career goal in that one.

Republic improves to 1-1 after dropping its season opener to Glendale 2-1 Monday night. Clara Fronabarger scored the lone goal in that one for Republic. Glendale scored two goals in the first ten minutes, and Republic threatened to tie the score several times in the final 20 minutes, but couldn’t score the equalizer.

Farr Better Player of the Game

Bella Drennan joined the soccer team just last year, and spent her time learning the position of goalkeeper on the junior varsity roster. This year, thrust into the varsity starting role and playing just her second varsity match, she made three saves during the overtime penalty kicks to help Republic edge Rolla for the first time ever. She’s our Farr Better Player of the Game.
