Lightning-Quick Start Shocks Carthage in Repmo Win

Lady Tigers coach Kris Flood wanted a fast start in the district semifinal against underdog Carthage. It’s hard to imagine how Republic could have started much faster.

The Lady Tigers bolted to a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and scored the first 24 points of the game in a 64-24 rout of Carthage Monday. Halli Bartelsmeyer’s 12 first-quarter points and Republic’s full-court pressure defense helped fuel the fast start.

“We really shot the ball well. The kids were aggressive on offense–even on the offensive boards,” said coach Kris Flood. I couldn’t ask for a better beginning.”

Delaney Smith kept several possessions alive in the first quarter after a teammate missed a shot, and each time, the Lady Tigers scored on a subsequent shot.

“Delaney did a really good job. She was going in there getting multiple rebounds. Jade was crashing the boards, Halli got off to a really good start.”

Ten different players scored for Republic, led by Bartelsmeyer’s 18. Savana Powell-Goodman also scored in double figures in limited minutes off the bench, finishing with ten.

“She’s really progressed his year,” Flood said of Powell-Goodman. “I told the kids, we’re in a situation where we’ve got a ton of bodies and we’ll just try to keep everybody fresh. And I’ve got a lot of confidence in those kids that come off the bench that had really good JV years, and they’ve helped us out, too, at the varsity level.”

Republic led 41-12 at halftime and 55-23 at the end of the third quarter, before outscoring Carthage 10-2 in the fourth quarter to end with a 40-point margin of victory.

The Lady Tigers improve to 19-8 and advance to the district championship game Friday night at 6:00. Republic will meet Willard, who knocked off Parkview in the second semifinal. Republic beat Willard in the teams’ first meeting, 34-31.
