Monett got a tie-breaking goal from all-state senior Jason Puente to squeak past Republic 2-1 Thursday night. The Cubs had taken a 1-0 lead before Drew Flippin tied the game with Republic’s only goal.
Coach Kevin Hauck says the Tigers played well, despite dropping the decision to a strong Monett squad.
“I told the boys that…we actually played a pretty good game and we gave ourselves a lot of opportunities. The difference was we just didn’t finish our opportunities,” Hauck says. “We had a lot of good looks, especially in the second half, and we just couldn’t find the back of the net. I mean, we were right there. We had chances. I think if we finish our opportunities, we win the game, but that’s the sport and that’s how it goes. Some nights you get lucky and you finish more, and other nights are a little bit off. Tonight was one of our off nights.”
The Tigers will participate in the Rolla Invitational this weekend.
