Tennis Tigers Nearly Perfect at Mt. Vernon

The Republic tennis team turned in a nearly flawless performance at the Mount Vernon Tournament Wednesday, losing just one match all day on the way to a team championship. The Tigers won 26 of 27 matches, sweeping all six singles brackets and winning two of three doubles brackets.

The only loss of the day was in the championship match of the #1 doubles bracket, where Hunter Creek and Isaac Jordan lost just a few key points in a competitive match, dropping their match 4–6.

It was the third straight team championship for Republic at the Mount Vernon Tournament. Excluding a rain-out in 2017, Republic’s seniors finished as champion in every year of their careers at Mount Vernon.

The dominating performance Wednesday helped Republic rebound from a 7–2 loss at Joplin Tuesday evening. In that dual, Republic lost three competitive matches in tiebreakers. Will Berry also got his first varsity start, pairing with Logan Elder in #3 doubles. The JV team beat Joplin 15–3.
