Sun Shines on Tigers in Varsity Tennis Opener

The sun finally came out long enough to let Republic’s varsity tennis team start it season — and the Tigers started it in a big way, with a 7-2 win over Springfield Central. Republic started the night with two wins in three doubles matches, before closing out the victory by winning five of six singles matches.

Despite the 7-2 overall score, the outcome of the night was in doubt for a while. During the three doubles matches that opened the night, it looked for a while like Central might sweep all three. But Dylan Mackey and Brett Carpenter pulled out an 8-5 win, and Logan Elder and Austin Massey came from behind to win their match, as well.

On the singles side, the Tigers won matches two through six. Hunter Creek, Isaac Jordan, Carpenter, Elder, and Massey were all victorious. Creek jumped ahead 5-2, then had to hold on for a close 9-7 victory. His win put the Tigers solidly in control, and Austin Massey clinched with an 8-1 win in his singles match.

Republic is 1-0, and the Tigers face Joplin on the road Tuesday.
