Republic entered the Pink & White Lady Classic looking like a team that had lost its way. Apparently, they’ve found it again.
The Lady Tigers jumped all over top-seeded Jonesboro, Ark., Wednesday, cruising into the tournament semifinals with a 53-37 win over the Lady Hurricane.
Halli Bartelsmeyer had a big night, leading Republic with 17 points. Avy Powell-Qualo added 13, as the Lady Tigers won their second straight game. They had only two wins coming into the tournament, and they already have two more since the tournament began.
“I think we’ve just got a little bit of confidence in ourselves, and we’re playing better as a team,” says coach Kris Flood. “We survived a little bit of a spurt during the second quarter. We just hung in there and kept it within two or three points, then finally we hit some big shots in the second quarter…and it seemed like we just went from there.”
Lacee Walcher made two three-pointers in the second period, including one at the buzzer that gave Republic a 20-16 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Republic pulled away, outscoring Jonesboro 15-7 and building a 35-23 lead. The Lady Tigers eventually led by more than 20 points on the way to a berth in the semifinals.
Republic (8) will face Fair Grove (5) Thursday night at 8:30. Fair Grove pulled away from Camdenton (4) for an 81-60 win Wednesday in the final game of the night. Republic takes a 4-6 record into its semifinal game.
