A Carthage header found the net with four seconds left in the second overtime period, handing Republic its first soccer loss since August, 1-0.
The teams played a classic for 60 minutes, with neither team able to score against stingy defenses. Dalton Ghan had turned in several big saves, and the game appeared headed to penalty kicks when Carthage finally broke through.
“It was a great game,” says coach Kevin Hauck. “A hard one to lose, but just a fabulous soccer game.”
Afterwards Hauck told his players to remember the loss as the season heads to its conclusion.
I told them this is great motivation for the rest of the year,” he says. “We will work hard to prepare us for districts, and hopefully get our rematch.”
Republic had won a school-record 13 in a row. Their last loss was to Nixa, 2-0, on August 29. The loss drops the Tigers to 15-3.
