Dylan Brown scored five goals Thursday to lead Republic to a 6-0 win over Marshfield. In the process, he became Republic’s all-time leading goal scorer.
Brown entered the game with 84 career goals, three shy of Julio Quezada’s school record of 86. Brown scored two in the first half within a minute of one another, then added three more late in the second half to cruise past the record and cement the Tigers’ win. Elijah Masten scored Republic’s other goal in the first half on an assist by Austin Beck.
Republic’s defense, with Dalton Ghan in goal, continued a historic season of its own. The previous team record for fewest goals scored is 31, set last year. That record will almost certainly fall in 2017, because the Tigers have allowed only 15 goals through their first 19 games.
Brown says he didn’t realize he had broken Quezada’s career mark until Ken Knierim announced it after the game.
““It feels great in the moment, but we have a lot more to accomplish this season as a team,” Brown says. “I love Julio…and honestly, I don’t know if I’d be where I am without him. My sophomore year, I didn’t do so well. He’s always stuck with me and helped me through it.”
Republic improves to 16-3. They have a showdown with conference rival Ozark at home next Tuesday. Republic beat Ozark 2-1 in the Parkview Tournament earlier this season.
