Despite all Republic’s success on the basketball court over the past five seasons, one bit of recognition had eluded the Tigers: they had not been invited to represent the Ozarks in the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions. That changed in 2017, when coach Trevyor Fisher led his team into JQH Arena to meet some of the country’s best high school teams.
Although the Tigers lost their three games, they showed they could play with the big boys. Against Sierra Canyon and the nation’s top recruit, Marvin Bagley III, Republic trailed by seven points at halftime, then cut the lead to three points in the 3rd quarter before the Trailblazers pulled away for 72-54 win.
Against nationally ranked Madison Prep of Baton Rouge, the Tigers’ stingy defense kept them in the game. Behind the early hot shooting of Ty Stevens, who hit four three-pointers in the 1st quarter, the Tigers stayed close before falling 43-39. They lost the finale to state-ranked Kickapoo, despite climbing out of an 11-point hole early in the game.
Despite the outcome of the games, Coach Trevyor Fisher praised his team’s attitude and performance.
“The way we competed and battled and weren’t scared of the moment or the atmosphere,” he said. “We came out and the guys played their butts off, and it was fun to watch.”
