Mitch Coiner shot a 79 at Hoots Hollow Golf Course in Pleasant Hill to qualify for the Class 4 state golf tournament next week. Coiner was the only Tiger golfer to make the cut, after all five — Coiner, Austin Melton, Kolby Hosp, Kendall Hamilton, and Grant Holmes had advanced to sectionals from the district tournament last week.
Coiner shot a 40 on the front nine, and improved to turn in a 39 on the back nine.
“We played our practice round yesterday to get a good look at the course. I knew it was a course I could score well on if I hit my irons well,” says Coiner. “I had a shaky start, but just kept grinding throughout the day. Golf is a mental game and I felt like I did a good job of just keeping my composure and staying focused.”
Hamilton shot an 87 for the Tigers. Melton shot a 91. Holmes finished with a 94, and Hosp turned in a 103.
Coiner will be close to home for the state tournament. It will be held at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin next week.
