Republic’s baseball team had won four of its last five games, earning some respect after a dismal 0-4 start. They’d done it with better pitching and solid hitting. Neither of those elements showed up in a 9-0 loss at Hillcrest Wednesday.
The Hornets hit four straight singles against Republic starter Blake Messier in the third inning, breaking open a 1-0 game and taking a 6-0 lead. They added two in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth.
Republic had six hits — two of them by Austin Atkins. Josh Gentry, Max Fricks, and Cameron Beck each doubled for the Tigers, and Landin Sigman added a hit.
Messier suffered the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) in 2 2/3 innings. Tyler Cavener allowed three runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings.
Republic falls to 4-6 this season.
