The baseball Tigers split two games Saturday, pushing top-ranked Aurora to extra innings in a morning loss, then rebounding with a win over Camdenton in the afternoon.
In the morning game, Republic jumped ahead 3-0 against Aurora (Class 4 #1), but needed a two-run homer by Landin Sigman to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings. In the top of the 9th, Aurora scored six runs to put the game away, clinching the 13-7 win and remaining undefeated this season.
Sigman and Gus Bauer each had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers in a losing cause. Cameron Beck pitched well as the starter, allowing just three unearned runs — but Republic errors led to three unearned runs for Aurora. A.J. Calhoon took the loss in relief.
In the afternoon game, Republic scored in each of the first five innings, cruising to a 7-3 win. Camdenton didn’t score until the sixth inning off Republic starter Austin Atkins, who struck out seven, walked two, and allowed two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. One of the runs was unearned. Tyler Cavener picked up the save.
Atkin knocked in three runs and scored twice. He reached base four times: on a double, a single, and two walks. Gus Bauer was 3-for-3 with a walk.
Republic is 3-5. The Tigers have won three of four games since their 0-4 start.
