For the third time this week, the Lady Tigers hung five goals on the scoreboard as their defense turned in a shutout. Thursday night, Marshfield was on the losing end of a 5-0 decision. Emily Jordan and Abbie Hicks each scored two goals. Jordan had a hand in all five goals, assisting on the three she didn’t score herself. Hicks also added an assist. Anna Jones had a goal and an assist, as well.
Celebrating her 16th birthday, Hicks started the scoring in the 47th minute after a scoreless first half. It took just 17 minutes from there for the Lady Tigers to pile five goals on Marshfield. Hicks says it was a good way to spend her special day.
“I always wanted to win on my birthday. I always hoped I’d have a game on my birthday one day,” she says.
Both of her goals came on assists by Jordan. Hicks says her strategy is simple.
“I just follow the ball,” she says. “If EJ kicks it, I’m going to be there. If the goalie has it, I’m still going to be on the goalie, even though I sometimes I accidentally run into them. But that’s okay–I always say ‘sorry.'”
After scoring just six goals in their first 14 games, the Lady Tigers have now scored 15 goals in the past three games.
Thursday night was also special for the Lady Tigers because it featured a fundraiser for the family of Audrey Pearce, the younger sister of Lady Tiger Emma Pearce. Audrey is fighting a form of cancer linked to a heart transplant she received several years ago, and the soccer team came together to raise money for the Pearce family’s medical expenses.
“It was pretty special,” says coach Kevin Hauck. “We always consider our team as a family, and when one family member goes through a tough time, you want to be there for them. It was good that the girls backed Emma and her family and got around them.
“I want to thank Marshfield for allowing us to do this … and they did some fundraising themselves, so that was a really classy move by them. I’m really proud of how the night went,” Hauck says.
Republic has won three straight to improve to 6-11 overall. They host Branson in a conference game on May 2.
