Springfield Central scored one goal before halftime and another early in the second half, then held on for a 2-1 win over Republic at Cooper Soccer Complex in Springfield Tuesday.
Republic’s lone goal came with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. Julio Quezada fed Drew Flippin just inside the 18. Flippin got free, spun to his left, and booted the ball into the right side of the net, past the Central keeper.
After that, though, Republic wasn’t able to mount another strong attack, as Central controlled possession until time expired.
“It wasn’t our best game,” says coach Kevin Hauck. “We didn’t come out with a lot of energy on this one. We definitely didn’t play as a team as well as we have been. This one’s going to sting, and it should. We know we can be better, and luckily we have an opportunity to win four more this week.”
Republic falls to 8-2 this year. The Tigers travel to Marshfield Thursday.
