Second Half Cold Spell Dooms Republic

At halftime of the Blue and Gold quarterfinal between Republic and Fair Grove at JQH Arena, a flooded office triggered an alarm that sparked an evacuation of the building. The players and fans returned about ten minutes later, but Republic’s offense didn’t.

The Tigers scored just 14 points in the second half, as Fair Grove cruised to a 61-44 victory.

Republic led by as many as five points in the first half, but a 30-foot jumper by Kyle Cavanaugh at the halftime buzzer gave Fair Grove a 32-30 lead going into the break.

The teams traded buckets early in the third quarter, but Fair Grove reeled off 11 straight points to take a 49-38 lead into the fourth quarter, and put the game away down the stretch.

Republic Tiger Sports20151228-4Cavanaugh finished with 26 points for Fair Grove. Treydon Rackley led Republic with 12 points and Tristan Ollar had 11.

The Tigers will play Hillcrest in the consolation bracket at 12:30 Tuesday at Hammons Student Center.
