Confident Hamilton Cruises into State

Two weeks ago, Katie Hamilton went into the Central Ozark Conference Tournament with no expectation of winning. She won anyway.

Monday, she returned to the same course–Horton Smith in Springfield–to participate in the state sectionals. This time she expected to play well enough to advance, and she played even better than before. Hamilton shot an 80, two strokes better than her score at the COC Tournament, to move into the Class Two state tournament at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield next week.

Hamilton says her familiarity with the course played a role in her confidence this time around.

“It’s like a home course, so I have a home course advantage,” she says. “It’s a course I know I can do well on. I felt on top of my game today. My drives were on all day and I was making the putts that counted.”

Starting with hole #10, Hamilton put herself in a hole this morning. She was four over par through her first three holes after shooting a bogey, a double bogey, and a bogey. On Hole #13, things started to turn around.

“I made a birdie putt on 13 and it helped me going into the next hole,” she says.
Even after her difficult start, Hamilton didn’t get rattled.
“I didn’t lose confidence. I knew I had to do better on the next six holes, and I knew that I could.  I didn’t really get disappointed.”
Hamilton says she’s not especially familiar with Rivercut, the site of the state tournament. But she’s played it “four or five times,” and expects to perform well during next week’s two-day state tournament.
“I don’t know where I’m going to place with the rest of the girls. I know I can do well and I can potentially shoot low 80s at that course,” she says.
The tournament will begin next Monday.
