Republic’s Jansen McQuerter and Webb City’s Derick Newby locked up in a pitcher’s duel Thursday night in Republic, and although McQuerter outlasted Newby on the mound, Webb City pulled out a 2-1 victory.
The game-winner scored in the top of the 6th, when Nutting lofted a sacrifice fly into centerfield to give Webb City its second run — and its first run since the 1st inning.
Each team had scored a single run in the opening frame. Webb City scored on a wild pitch by McQuerter, and the Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning when Austin Atkins scored on an error. The score remained knotted 1-1 until Webb City broke through five innings later.
The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Atkins reached on an error and Parker Nelson drew a walk. After a groundout, Webb City intentionally walked Regan Butterworth. Chandler coates hit a hard ground ball to second and Webb City got the force out at second base to end the game.
McQuerter went the distance, allowing two earned runs, striking out five, and walking none, but he was saddled with the loss. Newby was the winner, pitching six innings and allowing one run on five hits, with two strikeouts and a walk. Josh Moore picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning.
Republic falls to 11-5 this season. They play at Monett Friday night.
