Republic’s Cory Lafferty has signed to play basketball next season at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kansas. The Greyhounds compete in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
For Lafferty, Fort Scott offers a style of play he’s looking forward to at the college level.
“They said they needed a big guy, but also I can step out and shoot. I like that, because most guys aren’t going to let a 6’9” guy shoot,” Lafferty says. “Also, they have a big guy, so me and him can switch out.”
Lafferty will fill a hole in the Greyhounds’ roster, according to head coach Michael Cook.
“For us, getting Cory was more of a need for what we lose. We lose our height but we also lose a little bit of toughness and length, so by us grabbing Cory it gives us that,” Cook says. “We’re glad that he’s coming. He knows we’re going to push him hard.”
And Lafferty will be joining a team that has known some recent success.
“This year we were third in our region,” says Cook. “The year before we won conference and went to the national tournament.”
