Jocelyn Carpenter scored Republic first goal just 50 seconds into the game, and the Lady Tigers never looked back on their way to a 9-0 win over New Covenant Academy at home Friday night. Republic took a whopping 28 shots on goal in their lopsided victory.
Carpenter’s first goal came almost as soon as Republic marched down the field after the opening kickoff. Morgan Jones fed Carpenter, who put the Lady Tigers on the board.
Just two minutes later, Carpenter scored again, punching the ball into the lower left corner of the net. She picked up an assist on the third goal, feeding Lesleigh Fenton for a shot into the upper right corner of the goal, making it 3-0.
Emily Jordan made it 4-0 just 20 seconds later, Fenton scored again, then sophomore Danielle Beck picked up her first goal on a long shot over the New Covenant goalkeeper to make the score 6-0 at halftime.
Just one minute into the second half, Jordan scored again. Emily Griffith found the net three minutes later, and Katie Hamilton picked up her first career varsity goal with eight minutes remaining to account for the final 9-0 score.
Through three games, Carpenter has picked up a big scoring load for the Lady Tigers, picking up seven goals already.
“This summer I went to a camp, then I played club in the fall. I’ve just been more confident. I’ve had more of a desire to go get those goals,” says Carpenter. “But I also want to make sure other people get their chance too. I want to try to limit myself because everyone deserved a chance to win, and to have so many different girls score so far, it’s such a great thing.”
The variety of scoring is striking, compared to the first four years of the program when Sara Marcotte and Sierra Casagrand picked up 80% of the program’s goals. This season, nine different girls have scored through the first three games: Carpenter, Jones, Jordan, Fenton, Griffith, Morgan Cantrell, Jade Sawyer, Danielle Beck, and Katie Hamilton.
Republic improves to 3-0. Next up is Springfield Central on the road next Monday.
