Shanks, Kreul Snuff Out Nevada Upset Bid

MichaylaJust when Nevada seemed to be gathering momentum down the stretch in a major upset bid, Michayla Shanks nailed back-to-back three-pointers to get Republic over the hump in a 64-54 win. Sarah Kreul’s big 2nd half helped secure the victory for the Lady Tigers, who remain undefeated on the season.

“Michaya Shanks came in off the bench and gave us some relief and put a Band-Aid on there when we needed it, because we were in some trouble there for a little bit,” says coach Kris Flood. “We missed some shots. Not very good on defense. A whole lot of things we didn’t do well tonight.”

Republic trailed in the 3rd quarter, even though they had defeated Nevada by 25 points on Saturday. And even after Republic grabbed the lead midway through the third, Nevada stayed close, trailing by four going into the final period, 42-38.

Nevada cut the lead to three, 43-40, when Shanks went to work. She hit one three-pointer from the right wing and another from the left wing on back-to-back possessions, pushing the Lady Tigers’ lead to 49-40. For the game, Shanks had 13 points, including four treys.

SarahSenior Sarah Kreul also stepped up in the 2nd half, scoring 14 of her game-high 18 points after halftime. She hit 10 of 13 free throws to help seal the victory for the Lady Tigers. Alice Heinzler had nine and Alex Botkin scored seven.

Nevada got 15 points from Morgan McNeley and 14 from Tori Dahmer.

The win improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 17-0. Nevada falls to 11-8.

The overall girls basketball record for the entire program is now 72-0 for the season.
