The Republic Tigers helped head coach Howard Quigley earn his 400th career win with a 5-4 decision over Hillcrest at home Tuesday evening.
Starting pitcher Garrett Woods picked up his second win of the year, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
The Tigers broke on top with two runs in the 3rd when Patrick Dickens walked and scored on a triple by Woods. Woods scored on a wild pitch.
Republic added a run in the 4th when Clayton Rose doubled to lead off the inning, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nathan Strobel.
Hillcrest scored one in the 5th, but Republic answered with two more in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 5-1.
The Hornets plated three runs in the top of the sixth and had the tying run on 3rd when Strobel came in to pitch for Republic in relief. He retired the first batter on a fly ball, and worked around two errors in the top of the 7th to pick up the save.
Republic improves to 2-1. Hillcrest falls to 2-5.
