Monday marked the beginning of summer football camp for the Republic Tigers. Nearly 100 players reported for the first day of workouts Monday morning.

“This really isn’t the first day for most of (our kids),” coach Kurt Thompson said. “Most of them have been involved in our summer program, and we’ve mixed some football skills with that. We put helmets and shoulder pads on them for the first time.

“It’s just a matter of our kids getting acclimated to the heat. But it’s going to be hot when we start two-a-days, so in the long haul, this will be good for us.”

Thompson says despite the rough season in 2010, the players are positive as the new camp begins.

“We had a tough season last year, but our kids showed a lot of character showing up every day and working hard. We’re going to try to improve on that, and put a team out there that represents us all well.”
