The Republic Tigers came from behind in the 2nd half to win their first-round district game over Bolivar, 42-39. The Tigers trailed throughout the first half, but buckled down on defense after halftime to advance to the second round of the district tournament.
Bolivar led 23-18 at the midway point, but Republic held the Liberators to five points in the 3rd quarter, and led 32-28 going into the final period. The Tigers built their lead to eight points, at 38-30, but Bolivar came back to tie it at 38 apiece. Republic answered the tying basket immediately, on a fast-break layup by Jake Fletcher, to retake the lead for good. After a free throw by Bolivar, two free throws by Jonathan Combs built the lead to three points again, and a desperation shot by Bolivar at the buzzer fell short.
Nick Yocum scored 12 points to lead Republic. Ryan Mathis had 9 and Grant Hancock scored 8 for the Tigers. Jason Myers led all scorers with 14 points for Bolivar.
Republic will play top seed Hillcrest Thursday night at 6 p.m. Hillcrest had a bye in the opening round. The Hornets beat Republic 47-34 in the Republic Invitational Tournament at the beginning of the season.
