The Republic Tigers used a quick start and a solid finish at the free throw line to topple Waynesville 72-57. Republic got 21 points from Kevin Stander — 16 in the 2nd half. Jonathan Combs added 16 points and Nick Yocum had 15 for the Tigers.
Republic jumped out to an early lead, thanks to a fast start from Yocum. He hit three three-pointers in the 1st quarter, and had 14 of his 15 points in the 1st half. The Tigers led 21-13 after one period, and 37-22 at halftime.
Waynesville stayed in the game on the back of Kevin Vereen. The 6’3″ senior guard had 27 points for the visitors. He helped Waynesville cut the lead down to single digits in the 2nd half, but Republic hit its free throws down the stretch to hang on. Combs hit six straight free throws in the 4th quarter to help cement the lead.
Republic improves to 11-3. Waynesville falls to 7-8.
