The tenth-ranked Carthage Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage and shut down Republic’s offense all night, on the way to a 20-0 victory. Republic mustered just 77 yards of total offense — and only 26 yards in the second half.
Republic’s defense kept the game close against a good Carthage running attack. The game was scoreless after one quarter, but Carthage scored on its third possession of the game, driving 67 yards before Brian Poston scored on a 4-yard run. Republic blocked the extra point, and it was 6-0.
On its next possession, Carthage marched 56 yards for another score — this time a three-yard pass from Derek Peterson to Mason Siebert. Carthage succeeded on its 2-point conversion, making the score 14-0, where it stayed until halftime.
After Republic went three plays and punted on its first possession of the second half, Carthage quickly scored again. Their third touchdown came on a 12-yard run by Devron Moore. Republic blocked the extra point again, accounting for the final score of 20-0.
The Carthage offense was led by running back Derrick Moore. He rushed 22 times for 101 yards. Quarterback Derek Peterson was 10-for-14 for 84 yards passing.
Republic’s leading rusher was Colton McCarty. He carried the ball 14 times for just 32 yards. The Tigers had -1 passing yard for the entire game.
Republic falls to 2-5, and starts district play next week at McDonald County. Carthage improves to 6-1.
