Republic mustered only four hits against Carthage starter Chastity Henson in a 2-1 loss at Miller Park. (See video highlights below.)
Carthage jumped on top in the fifth, when Amber Taylor singled up the middle, scoring Kaylee Morgan, who had doubled to start the inning. They added an insurance run on an RBI triple by Sam Bogle in the top of the sixth. The offensive damage could have been worse, but Carthage committed two key baserunning mistakes that led to double plays for Republic.
Republic’s only run came on a home run by Hailey Johnson in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Tigers rallied to put the tying run in scoring position in that inning, but failed to tie it up. They didn’t seriously threaten in the bottom of the seventh.
Amanda Davis had two hits and Payton Appleberry had one, and that was the extent of the offense for the Lady Tigers, who fall to 10-4.
The Carthage JV team also won, beating Republic 3-2.
